Pune: Tata Power’s flagship initiative Anokha Dhaaga, under its Smart Circularity programme, has successfully transformed over 5,000 kilograms of plastic waste into recycled fabric products – creating livelihood opportunities for women across Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
The initiative, aligning with the World Environment Day 2025 theme “End Plastic Pollution,” showcases the power of circular economy models in driving both environmental sustainability and community empowerment.
Through this innovative programme, women micro-entrepreneurs produced eco-friendly T-shirts, tote bags, and haversacks, generating over ₹20 lakh in fair-trade income.
The project is part of Tata Power’s broader #SustainableIsAttainable movement and the Tata Group’s Project Aalingana, both focused on inclusive and climate-resilient growth.
Turning Waste into Opportunity
The initiative began with a company-wide plastic waste collection drive at Tata Power’s Trombay plant and Mumbai offices. The collected plastic was processed by circular economy pioneer ReCircle, converting it into Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (RPET) fabric.
Women trained under Anokha Dhaaga then transformed this fabric into high-quality, market-ready products.
Additionally, the programme integrated pre-loved denim donations, extending the lifecycle of clothing and reinforcing the sustainability mission. Bulk B2B orders and institutional linkages further enhanced the programme’s economic viability and reach.
Empowering Over 30,000 Women Across India
Originating as a small self-help initiative in Mulshi, Maharashtra, Anokha Dhaaga has grown into a national movement, empowering over 30,000 women across nine states. Participants receive training in skill development, product design, and entrepreneurship, with access to markets for selling eco-friendly home décor, stationery, and even millet-based food products.
“Anokha Dhaaga is a shining example of how circular innovation can empower grassroots communities while addressing pressing environmental issues like plastic waste,” said a Tata Power spokesperson.
Anokha Dhaaga: A Model for Scalable Green Livelihoods
By turning waste into opportunity, Tata Power is reinforcing its commitment to green innovation, women empowerment, and climate action. The Anokha Dhaaga Smart Circularity programme not only reduces landfill-bound plastic but also establishes a replicable model for sustainable livelihoods across India.
As the global community marks World Environment Day 2025, Tata Power’s initiative stands out as a testament to how responsible corporate action can drive systemic change through community-led, circular economy solutions.
